Plumbing Technology - We've Come A Long Way Baby
Technology is a great and grand thing. Unless you don't believe in technology of course, but then you really shouldn't be here because technology has made it possible for you to be reading this. When we think of technology we think of computers, LCD monitors, plasma televisions, and cures for cancer. However, these are modern technologies. There are older technologies that are so embedded into our daily lives that we really don't think much about it. One good example is plumbing technology.
At one time, using an indoor toilet was unheard of. Imagine the stench of having an outhouse in your house. Who would do such a barbaric thing? Well, today this may be laughable and we consider an outhouse more of the "barbaric", roughing it type of thing, but in our not to distant past, the roles were much different. Plumbing technology has sure come a long way; surprisingly, it is still growing.
Today more than ever, plumbing technology has taken a step into the technological age of digital tools and faster, better materials. Modernized regulations have made dangerous, infectious plumbing systems of the past a thing of the… well, past. Plumbers today are licensed professionals that have been educated either in school or in the field. Sometimes both methods are used. Which is better? That is all a matter of personal opinion.
Where is plumbing going tomorrow? Well, that is anyone's guess. New products are making the septic system cleaner and friendly to the environment, while other products are making are drinking water tastier and our bather water softer. Water is such an intricate part of our lives. Today, indoor plumbing is a necessity for much of the world. There are some worlds that haven't quite reached the level of advanced plumbing as other parts of the world.
Plumbing technology is an interesting subject to study. Should you ever have some free time, I suggest getting a couple of books on the history of plumbing. No, it may not be the most exciting book you own, it definitely makes for an excellent bathroom reading material.
